Unless you grew up in a very small area of Pennsylvania, chances are you’ve need heard of German Pizza or German Pie as it’s affectionately referred to by the locals. Even in the rural areas of Easton, PA where the “pie” seems to be the most popular, there’s not really alot of places it can be found. I remember eating my first one at Miz’s Steak House, which has long been closed.
Think of a German Pizza as a cross between a pizza and a Philly Cheesesteak. It’s really that simple. If you Google it what you’ll find is nothing close to what I’m talking about. So how do you make a German Pizza? First off the typical pizza ingredients; crust, sauce and mozzarella cheese. Next some thinly sliced ribeye steak, onions, and sliced banana peppers. That’s it.
Prepare the pizza like any other. Crust, then sauce, then cheese. Cook and chop the ribeye steak and then sprinkle on pizza, add the sliced onions and banana peppers and you’re good to go. That’s it. Oh, and don’t forget the Birch beer.
I lived in Northampton for almost 20 years,Where Marios Pizza has been in business since 1979-They’re version of German pizza is similar-but it’s basically a cheese steak pizza (meat goes on top of the cheese, then baked) which they top with banana peppers, but also shredded iceburg lettuce, chopped tomatoes, red onion -Similar but different
I’ve had it that way too. Both are great!!
every time i had it was with steak peppers onions and pepperoni all on too of the cheese
Never had it with pepperoni. Interesting.
The best place I had a German pie was Pinos pizzeria in south side Easton Pa, grew up on it!! I live in central pizza and all the pizza places around me in small towns, don’t make it, it’s ashame, such a good pizza!
Been there and you are correct!!
Oh my God I remember that I grew up in PBurg but it’s been a lot of time in PA

I don’t know when the last time you went to Easton was, but “rural” is rather misleading.
Lived in Easton from ‘72-‘76 where my Dad worked 2nd shift at “the Cup”. I always looked forward to Friday nights because I knew he would be bringing a German pie home from Miz’s. Never had anything like it since then. Does anyone still make a German pie in Easton? I will hit the road from Lexington, Ky to get one!
Yes,Miz’s was classic. I believe there are a coupole places in Easton that make them. Might check the Easton Facebook page for locations
